• What type of ABA do you provide? Traditional or Today's ABA?

    • Traditional ABA has had a compliance-based focus, however, at Vista Academy we use a gentle and compassionate approach valuing regulation, assent and rapport. We want every child to feel seen and celebrated. With a trauma-assumed holistic lens and listening to autistic voices we can ensure we stay person-centered and use motivation and reinforcement to teach! Vista will never push a child to learn in a state of distress, instead, we provide support and work through the big emotions with your child.
    • The biggest message we want to convey for all families currently with us or looking to start services is that WE ARE NOT FIXERS - your child does not need to be fixed. They need to be supported and accommodated and that is something we value at our core.

  • What does the enrolment process look like?

    STAGE 1 | TOUR & INFORMATION MEETING

Experience the centre in person! First, come for a tour, meet our Director's and see Vista’s magic firsthand. Bring the whole family down and learn more about our programs and how we support our students. The next step is to request our Enrollment Document, complete the form on a desktop if possible and upload your supporting assessments/reports for review. The document is extensive, and the more detail, the better. We charge a $100 enrollment fee to hold your child’s spot as we begin enrollment and initial observations.

    STAGE 2 | COMPLEMENTARY OBSERVATIONS

Our policy is to have all new candidates attend a minimum of (1) one-hour observation up to (3) one-hour observations. These in-centre highly focused clinical 1:1 observations are mandatory and help us understand your child's individual needs, strengths, behaviours, quirks and strengths.

    STAGE 3 | GRADUAL ENTRY

Gradual entry is a critical transition phase allowing students and teachers time to make meaningful connections and develop rapport. The speed at which each child progresses through this will be variable and unique to each situation; however, most gradual entries span at least two weeks, with some students needing several weeks. The first week or two will begin with shorter days and increase up to the desired schedule.

  • Are you open for Summer?

YES! We are open all summer long providing 1:1 Intervention, Respite or Tutoring along with 3:1 Special Interest Groups or Respite.

  • Why are regulation, self-advocacy and functional communication an important skill to learn for my learner?

    • We believe regulation is the foundation of learning, for your child to learn it is fundamental that they are happy, relaxed, and engaged. Vista prioritizes finding regulating accommodations and strategies while allowing your child to access a space that's safe to work through those hard moments and feel supported.
    • Functional communication is crucial for each person to ensure their needs are met. Pairing regulation and functional communication provides each learner with a strong basis for learning while undoing trauma in an environment tailored to their needs with a team who can validate them!
    • Respecting bodily autonomy and self-advocacy is a must and this may look different from learner to learner. Helping your child learn what regulation and communication look like for them helps them feel more confident advocating for their needs and wants.

  • Do you accept children who are not potty trained?

YES! Many of our learners have come to us with toileting needs as well as making it a priority of theirs to learn.

  • Are Vista Academy’s programs open to the public? Or do you need to be enrolled already?

You do not need to be enrolled already to attend Respite, social/special interest groups, and camps, these programs are open to the public. Our goal is to provide a space for all kiddos (neurodivergent or not) to feel included, seen and celebrated!

  • Can children with behaviours attend the center?

Vista Academy understands that children are separate from their behaviours, and we do not decline enrollment should candidates exhibit challenging behaviour during their observations. After all,  it is our job to teach them the skills they need to feel confident and successful.

  • Do you homeschool directly?

Our in-centre homeschooling program is designed to provide learners with a 1:1 flexible education option that prioritizes behavioural, socio-emotional and academic goals. Since 2017, Vista Academy has partnered with both Anchor and Ascend (distant learning platforms) to allow learners to access individualized education. This option allows your child to access a collaborative IEP along with their special education funding going directly toward their Vista tuition.

  • Does my child need to be neurodivergent to attend Respite?

No! Our respite childcare program is open to all kiddos, this way families can have both their children attend and get a full evening or Saturday kid-free!
